How to Wash Your Wig Properly

How to Wash Your Wig Properly

Wearing a wig (peruca) can be a fun and convenient way to change up your look, but it's important to remember that wigs require proper care to ensure they last as long as possible. Just like your natural hair, wigs need to be washed regularly to remove dirt and oils that can build up over time.

But one of the major concerns with wigs is the delicate lace that can easily puncture with the comb inside the hair. I would say 75% of holes that end up on your lace is caused by how you scrunch it or squeeze it together when washing. I have been guilty of doing this many times. I was putting holes in my unit and I didn’t even know where it was coming from until one day I took a look at the combs and was positioning to the lace and it was the exact spot. Which is why it's important to know how to properly wash your wig to keep it looking fresh and beautiful.

When washing your wig, it's important to start by focusing on the lace part. This is the most delicate part of the wig and it requires special attention. Using a wig-specific cleanser, gently clean the lace part. This type of product is specifically formulated to be gentle on wigs, and it will help to remove dirt and buildup without causing damage. Be sure to hold the part where the comb is located, as this will help to protect the delicate lace and avoid punching holes in it. This method is also applied when rinsing.

After you have washed your wig with a cleanser, it's time to condition it. Conditioning your wig is just as important as conditioning your natural hair, as it will help to keep the fibers soft and smooth. Use a wig-specific conditioner and gently massage it through the hair, leaving it on for a few minutes before rinsing it out thoroughly.

Once you've washed and conditioned your wig, gently squeeze out any excess water and then place the wig on a position that will maintain its shape and let it dry. Avoid using heat to dry your wig, instead, let it air dry naturally. Once your wig is dry, you can brush it again to restore its style and shape.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your wig stays in great condition and continues to look great for a long time. Remember to handle your wig with care and to wash it regularly to keep it looking its best. Always use wig-specific products, be gentle when washing and handling your wig, and pay special attention to the lace part. This will help to prolong its lifespan and avoid puncturing the lace with the comb.
